The Linrob Genealogy
Site
Welcome to my family genealogy site - I hope you find something of
interest. If any of the the people mentioned here are part of your
family tree I'd be delighted to hear from you, and we can share more
detailed information.
Surnames, (and their place of origin) of particular interest to me
are ROBERTSON (Morayshire),
FREW (Ross &
Cromarty, Scotland, and USA), GLOVER
(Dumfries and Galloway), SKIRVING (Lothians,
Fife and Glasgow) and LAWSON (Edinburgh and
Fife), but clearly there are lots more besides.
These pages include simple trees of the following family groups:
- Glover, Joseph Johnstone (1853 -
1908), and his wife Agnes Jardine, were my maternal great grandparents.
Born in Maxwelltown, Dumfries, the son of James Anderson Glover, a
shoemaker, Joseph served as provost of Dumfries from 1896-1908. Other
surnames associated with this branch of the family include
McNAUGHT, RENWICK,
McKIE, SUTHERLAND
and probably ANDERSON.
- Robertson, John (ca 1766 - 1831).
John, also recorded as Robtson (IGI) and Robinson (MI), was born most
probably in the parish of Abernethy. He married Ann Stuart in Dell, in
1795, and the couple had six children. John farmed at Dell, an area
close to Nethybridge, where his first two children were born. He then
moved to Clachaig, where his remaining four children were born, the
last, Anne being born in 1809. John and Anne were my paternal 3rd great
grandparents. There are links with the ALLAN
family in this area. Through my paternal grandmother, Christina Rose
Frew, there are links to the FREW surname.
- Skirving, Robert (b. ca
1764), who married Martha Davidson in 1787, was a merchant in Kirkcaldy
in Fife, and my maternal 4th great grandfather. Other surnames of
interest here are SCHOOLBRED,
WILLOCK, WATSON
and PATERSON.
- Skirving, William (ca 1745 - 1796), son of
William Skirving of Nether Liberton,
near Edinburgh, was one of the 'Scottish Martyrs',
who was charged with sedition in 1794 and sentenced to (14 years)
transportation to Botany Bay. William left behind him in Fife, a wife
(Rachel ABERCROMBIE). and at least two
young sons. There are some useful links
relating to William, and a short
chronology included here.
I am desperately trying to find a link between William the Martyr
and the family of Robert Skirving from Kirkcaldy, mentioned above.
I've also selected a few notable characters
which are of more general interest, in the hope that you may recognise
individuals. For some I have detailed information, for others I hope you
will be able to help me acquire more !
